Future Innovators Forum – The Race to Net Zero

May 3, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

What is the Future Innovators Forum?

In collaboration with the University of Alberta Engineering students, we have designed an event that sparks conversation and encourages the development of new network relationships. This event connects industry to young professionals and students who will be vital for our industry’s future.

The topic for this event is “The Race to Net Zero” and we will touch on carbon capture, technologies, and practices to accelerate Canada’s sustainability leadership.

Program:

  1. Keynote speaker presentation
  2. Tabletop discussions
  3. Industry networking

A light meal will be provided and a cash bar will be available to all participants.

Keynote Speaker: DARCY SPADY

Darcy W. Spady, P.Eng., is the Managing Partner of Carbon Connect International, a company that specializes in emissions reduction; training, baseline measurement, quantification, and de-carbonization implementation. As the 2018 SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) International President he represented SPE personally in 49 different countries. Spady has an extensive background in the natural gas, oil, and heavy oil segments of the industry. He also serves on several boards in various positions; General Magnetic (cleantech), MNP Petroleum and EnAct (energy poverty awareness). Spady presently serves as the Industry Chair for the Remediation & Reclamation program at Olds College in Alberta, Canada. He has a B.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta.

Abstract:

The race to net zero includes many factors, incorporating all forms of carbon mitigation, reduction and re-use.  Carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS) is a vital solution as are efforts in mitigating carbon and carbon-equivalent emissions (especially methane) and the aggressive reduction of emissions.  A robust carbon pricing system, effective policy, and industry buy-in are also essential.  We are fortunate to have them all in Alberta. This talk will address some key points, but also pose some challenging suggestions as to priorities, next steps, and efficiencies.  The future for energy experts is strong, and the world need us more then ever as future energy professionals to direct the transition to the most efficient sources of energy, many of which are right in our own backyard.
