SUMMARY:ENERGY CHANGEMAKERS: The Importance of Knowledge Sharing in Bringing CCS Projects to Life
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to CHOA LEARNS: Energy Changemakers! \nThis year-long series will feature insightful\, interactive talks by technical and business leaders who are shaping the future of Canadian energy. \nEach event will include dedicated time to network and learn from each other.Let’s get together and learn something new! \n_______________________________________________________________________________________________ \nCHOA LEARNS: ENERGY CHANGEMAKERS presents:\nThe Importance of Knowledge Sharing in Bringing CCS Projects to Life\nPresentation by James Miller\, President and Chief Executive Officer\, International CCS Knowledge Centre  \nThe capture and storage of CO2 (CCS) from heavy industry has long been recognized as a critical component of achieving a carbon-neutral and sustainable energy future. However\, the deployment of large-scale CCS projects has lagged behind rates proposed by organizations like the International Energy Agency and the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Recent developments indicate a shift in this trend. The social and economic value of CCS is increasingly acknowledged\, as well as its contribution to energy security and sustainability\, leading to higher public support and capital investment. As a result\, the global pipeline of CCS projects is growing\, with the increase in potential capture capacity rising from 75 million tonnes per year in 2022 to 320 million tonnes per year in March of 2023. \nDespite aspirations\, it remains true that more CCS projects have failed than succeeded. The reasons are multifaceted\, including technical\, engineering\, economic\, financial\, and political challenges. To maximize the chances of success for current projects\, it is imperative that lessons learned from previous experience are applied\, to reduce risk\, lower costs and improve the performance of the next generation of CCS technologies. \n_________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nSPEAKER BIO:  \nAs President and CEO\, James Millar provides strategic leadership at the International CCS Knowledge Centre (Knowledge Centre). He directs planning and management in advancing the development of carbon capture technology as a key mitigation strategy for climate action. Under his management\, Knowledge Centre engineers and analysts are building partnerships across industries to plan and develop large-scale CCS projects in Canada and around the world\, enhancing and de-risking the investment opportunities around this growing technology. \nPrior to joining the Knowledge Centre\, James gained deep experience in energy\, industrial infrastructure\, and public policy. He began his career in Saskatchewan\, where he was a senior advisor in government\, before being appointed Director of Public Affairs for the 25\,000-employee Calgary Health Region. He transitioned to the energy industry\, providing public affairs direction to TransCanada Corporation (now TC Energy) during planning and development of major infrastructure projects including the Keystone XL and Energy East pipelines. Most recently\, he managed public affairs for Pieridae Energy\, working on a $10-billion LNG project off Canada’s east coast\, and Pieridae’s planned carbon capture initiative. \n_________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nWHERE: The Calgary Petroleum Club \nWHEN: July 13th\, 2023 – 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM \nThe presentation is followed by a networking session. \nThe ticket includes a breakfast buffet. \nEVENT SPONSORED BY: \n \nIf you have any issues with the registration\, please email jmichayluk@choa.ab.ca for immediate assistance.

SUMMARY:ENERGY CHANGEMAKERS - Design Considerations and Operational Approach for the use of Steam Splitters in SAGD Applications
DESCRIPTION:ENERGY CHANGEMAKERS present: \nDesign Considerations and Operational Approach for the use of Steam Splitters in SAGD Applications \nAbstract: \nTubing deployed flow control devices\, installed on the long injection string are commonly used by the majority of thermal SAGD operators.   From its initial introduction in the mid-2000’s\, the device has maintained its basic functionality\, providing operators with the ability to improve steam chamber conformance while reducing associated Cap-Ex costs associated dual parallel injection string designs.   With the drive to drill longer wellbores\, the number of devices installed on the injection strings have seen significant increase\, with some operators deploying >10 devices per string.  This presentation reviews specific design considerations which improve both the longevity of the device and its operational performance. \n  \nPresenters: \nJames McCaffery and Scott Hobbs \n  \nWHERE: The Calgary Petroleum Club \nWHEN: December 7th\, 2023 – 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM \nThe presentation is followed by a networking session. \nThe ticket includes a breakfast buffet. \n  \n_______________ \nWelcome to CHOA Energy Changemakers! \nThis year-long series features insightful\, interactive talks by technical and business leaders who are shaping the future of Canadian energy. \nEach event includes dedicated time to network and learn from each other. \nLet’s get together and learn something new! \n_______________ \n  \nEVENT SPONSORED BY: \n

(GERI) \n– \nWHERE: The Calgary Petroleum Club \nWHEN: January 25th\, 2023 – 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM \nThe presentation is followed by a networking session. \nThe ticket includes a breakfast buffet. \nREGISTER TODAY \n– \nAbstract: \nGERI will discuss Direct Contact Steam Generation (DCSG)\, a technique that simultaneously injects steam and hot combustion flue gases into an oil reservoir. The process offers a decreased carbon intensity solution to enhance oil production by reducing oil viscosity through heat\, repressuring the reservoir with flue gases\, improving solubility with residual CO2 and reducing heat loss to the overburden by creating an insulating blanket of non-condensable flue gases at the top of the reservoir. DCSG results in a lower Steam-Oil-Ratio (SOR)\, thereby reducing GHG intensity by as much as 65% relative to OTSG. DCSG uses less than half the fresh water compared to existing OTSG\, up to 80% steam quality. The portable DCSG system has successfully deployed in several heavy oil pilot projects focused on post-CHOPS wells in the Lloydminster oil fields of Canada. GERI will present the results of pilot tests including at least one steam and production cycle where noticeable production gains were observed in the offset wells resulting in lower combined SOR’s than the typical industry SOR’s of 3.0 or more. More recent results from deployments will speak to the quantification and measurement methodology of reduced GHG emissions that can be submitted to independent third-party verifiers for regulatory submissions. \n  \nSpeaker Bio: \nGene Wasylchuk is the interim Chief Executive Officer of GERI\, a company that specializes in innovative Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology. Gene has a wealth of experience in the oil and gas industry\, having led various projects and companies that focused on growth\, innovation\, and sustainability.
