Abstract:

GERI will discuss Direct Contact Steam Generation (DCSG), a technique that simultaneously injects steam and hot combustion flue gases into an oil reservoir. The process offers a decreased carbon intensity solution to enhance oil production by reducing oil viscosity through heat, repressuring the reservoir with flue gases, improving solubility with residual CO2 and reducing heat loss to the overburden by creating an insulating blanket of non-condensable flue gases at the top of the reservoir. DCSG results in a lower Steam-Oil-Ratio (SOR), thereby reducing GHG intensity by as much as 65% relative to OTSG. DCSG uses less than half the fresh water compared to existing OTSG, up to 80% steam quality. The portable DCSG system has successfully deployed in several heavy oil pilot projects focused on post-CHOPS wells in the Lloydminster oil fields of Canada. GERI will present the results of pilot tests including at least one steam and production cycle where noticeable production gains were observed in the offset wells resulting in lower combined SOR’s than the typical industry SOR’s of 3.0 or more. More recent results from deployments will speak to the quantification and measurement methodology of reduced GHG emissions that can be submitted to independent third-party verifiers for regulatory submissions.

Speaker Bio:

Gene Wasylchuk is the interim Chief Executive Officer of GERI, a company that specializes in innovative Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology. Gene has a wealth of experience in the oil and gas industry, having led various projects and companies that focused on growth, innovation, and sustainability. Gene joined GERI in 2023, as the company was transitioning from R&D and field trials to commercialization of its game-changing EOR technology, which reduces carbon intensity, water usage, and costs while increasing oil recovery and reservoir repressurization. Gene’s vision, expertise, and leadership skills are instrumental in guiding GERI through this critical phase and ensuring its success in the competitive and evolving energy market. Gene is passionate about creating a positive impact on the environment and society through better and more sustainable practices in oil recovery. He is also committed to fostering a culture of collaboration and inclusion within GERI and with its stakeholders. He believes that GERI has the potential to become one of the leading innovators in EOR and to contribute to the global energy transition. Prior to joining GERI, Gene held various senior executive positions in the oil and gas sector, including President and CEO of Altair Water and Drilling Services Inc., Vice President of Midstream – Engineering, Geotechnical and New Ventures at Tervita Corporation, and President and CEO of Deep Resources Ltd. He also founded and led Creator Energy Innovations, a company that developed integrated and balanced power solutions using renewable and conventional energy sources.
